How Do I Choose a Psychotherapist?

Choosing a Psychotherapist

In finding a therapist it also important to take into account their licensure, certifications, and what type of payment they will accept. However, when someone works with a therapist the most powerful part of the process is the relationship that is developed between the client and therapist. It's all about the "fit". Finding the right fit with a therapist begins with the first meeting. Therapists who are concerned about the right fit will agree to an initial no cost 30-minute session. Asking for this "get to know you" session is an option that can be requested when selecting a therapist.

You should feel comfortable with your choice of therapist. Call several therapists and ask for a free consultation. It is important that you feel the therapist is sensitive and responsive to what you are saying. Ask questions about the length of treatment, cost of therapy and their experience with your kind of problem.

Finding a Therapist:

  • Check your insurance coverage for a list of providers. You may be limited to a certain group or person
  • Consult your Human Resources Department at your place of employment to see if they have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Ask your doctor or another healthcare professional to recommend a therapist
  • Ask a friend in therapy
  • Consult with local clergy
  • Search for providers on our website: www.Mentalhealthanswers.org (all providers in this website have been checked for licensure and have chosen to listed)
